The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is the agency of the state of Michigan charged with promoting wise management of the state's air, land and water resources to support a sustainable environment, healthy communities and vibrant economy. It's guiding principles are to be leaders in environmental stewardship, partners in economic development and providers of excellent customer service.〔() DEQ Mission〕 ==History== In 1995, the Department of Environmental Quality was created by Executive Order No. 1995-18, which transferred environmental regulatory programs from the Department of Natural Resources to it.〔() History of the DEQ〕 In 2009, Governor Jennifer Granholm moved to merge the department back into the Department of Natural Resources and take over the authority to appoint the reunited department's director, instead of leaving it to the Natural Resources Commission. The state Senate passed a resolution to stop the merger.
